Still—moving
(Work in progress)
Forced by the housing crisis to relocate, my partner Salomón, our dog Blanquito, and I lodge in Cabanas de Tavira, in southern Portugal — a territory emptied out by the intensive economy of summer tourism. During off-season, we walk Blanquito through the quiet village; Salomón works on his DIY film scanner; I take care of the car I bought to navigate the crisis as if it were home. Nearby, the residents of the SAAL Amigos Unidos de Cabanas neighbourhood strive to preserve the associative spirit with which they built it in 1975, in the framework of the Serviço de Apoio Ambulatório Local*. Two women, who 51 years ago built their own homes, meet periodically at the Residents' Association to create handcrafted objects they use to decorate the neighbourhood's streets. We search for audiovisual memories of the neighbourhood. In the images hand-scanned by Salomón, ghosts emerge and invade reality.
*An unparalleled state program that emerged after the 1974 Carnation Revolution, in which architects and technical brigades supported populations living in housing poverty in building their own homes.
